What an address does reveal

A lookup shows the provider, the network and a rough location. The location is often the provider’s nearest hub, which can be miles from you.

Who can link it to you

Your provider knows which customer had an address at a given time. They normally release that only to the police or through a court order. A website you have signed in to can also connect the address to your account, which is why separate accounts matter more than the address itself.

The real risks

The address is not a secret, but a few things can go wrong:

  • Gaming or chat services sometimes expose addresses to other players, who may try to flood the connection with traffic.
  • An exposed router, camera or device at that address can be found by scanning, if it is left open or unpatched.
  • Combining an address with other details someone posts can narrow things down.

How to reduce them

Keep your router and devices updated, use strong passwords, do not expose services you do not need, and use a VPN where an address would be visible to people you do not trust. If you are being harassed, tell your provider, who can often change your address.

Common questions

Can someone hack me with only my IP address?

Not by knowing it alone. They would need an open or vulnerable service at that address, which good router settings and updates prevent.

Can someone find my home address from my IP address?

No. An address shows an approximate area. Only your provider can connect it to your account and home.

Should I change my IP address if it was shared?

Usually no. If you are being targeted, restart your router or ask your provider, and consider a VPN.
