How to change your IP address
You can change your public IP address by restarting your router, switching to a different network such as mobile data, using a VPN, or asking your provider. Which works depends on whether your address is dynamic or static.
Restart your router
Switch the router off for a few minutes, then back on. With a dynamic address your provider may give you a new one when it reconnects. Some providers hand the same address back if it is still free, so a longer wait helps.
Switch network
Use mobile data or a different Wi-Fi network. This gives you that network’s public address straight away, and you can switch back whenever you like.
Use a VPN
A VPN shows websites the address of its server instead of yours. You can pick a server and change it at any time, which also lets you appear in another country.
Ask your provider
If you have a dynamic address, your provider can often reset it on request. A static address will only change if you ask them to assign a new one.
Check that it worked
Note your address on the My IP page before you start and look again afterwards. Remember that browsers and sites may take a minute to notice the change.
Common questions
Does restarting my router change my IP address?
Sometimes. It depends on your provider’s setup. If it does not, wait longer or try a VPN.
Does changing my IP address unblock me from a website?
It can if the block was on your old address, but blocks tied to your account or device will not be affected.
Is changing my IP address illegal?
No. Using a different address is generally legal across the UK and Europe, though each country has its own rules. Using it to do something unlawful is not.
