What is 192.168.1.1? Finding your router login
192.168.1.1 is a private IP address that many home routers use for their settings page. If you type it into a browser while connected to your home network, you should reach your router’s login page.
Why that address
192.168.0.0/16 is a range reserved for private networks, and routers pick one address in it for themselves, called the default gateway. 192.168.1.1 is a common choice. Others include 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.254 and 10.0.0.1.
How to log in
Connect to your home Wi-Fi or plug in with a cable, then:
- Open a browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
- Enter the username and password. Defaults are often printed on a label on the router.
- Change the default password straight away if you have not already.
If it does not work
Your router probably uses a different address. On Windows, run ipconfig and look for Default Gateway. On a Mac, open Network settings, choose your connection and look for Router. On a phone, open the Wi-Fi details for your network.
What you can do there
You can change the Wi-Fi name and password, see connected devices, reserve addresses, update the router and check the public address your provider gave you.
Common questions
Why can’t I reach 192.168.1.1 from outside my home?
It is a private address, so it only works on your own network. This is by design.
What is the default password?
It depends on the router. Look at the label, the manual, or the provider’s instructions. Change it once you are in.
Is 192.168.1.1 my IP address?
It is your router’s private address. Your public address, the one websites see, is different and is shown on the My IP page.
